What is Body Mass Index?
Body Mass Index, commonly known as "BMI", is a mathematical formula that is used to determine your ideal "healthy" weight based on your height. It should be used in conjuction with the Waist : Hip ratio to determine if you are overweight or obese.
How is BMI calculated?
The following formula is used to determine your Body Mass Index:
Weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2
Is my BMI healthy?
The following are the BMI ranges defined by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention:
| BMI | Weight Status |
| Less than 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 - 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 - 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
Studies have shown that a BMI of 25 or above is associated with an increased risk of health conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.
