Your doctor should be able to prescribe hormone therapy which should regulate your thyroid hormone levels normal. Then you should be able to lose weight as per normal with a healthy calorie controlled diet and exercise regime.

Alan - if only it was that easy! I've been on hormone replacement for over 1 year. i eat less that 1500 calories a day and work out regularly and i'm still gaining. My Doctor's swears that i will level out and start losing soon. I gain 13 pounds in the last 2 months while under doctor's care and a strict diet. Anyone out there have REAL sucess losing weight with Hashimoto's?

I have had Hashimotos for years - gained over 80 pounds now. I have always been a healthy eater and keep active. I even gain weight by eating fruit! I would like to know how to loose weight as well. I have tried Atkins, South Beach, WEight watchers, High fiber - nothing has worked for me. not even Mary Shoman's diet...Help!!

I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in November 2008. I take thyroxine which I don't like. I take herbs from my naturopath for the immune system and I juice vegetables. Try Dr Cabot's book Raw juices can save your Life. There's an excellent recipe in there for thyroid disease. (Beetroot, radish, ginger, carrot, lettuce, kelp.) I have lost 1 kg (2.2 pounds) since Christmas.
Spiritually, the thyroid relates to humiliation. I am also joining a clinical trial that looks at ways of releasing old emotional problems. I'm hoping all these things will work. I don't want to take synthetic hormones for the rest of my life. Good luck to all of you with your weight loss.
