Infectobesity: Catching Obesity From A Virus

Diabetes Health Human adenovirus-36 (AD-36) is an unwelcome visitor already because it causes colds, infections like pink-eye, and small intestine inflammation. Her research builds upon the findings of her colleague, Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar, who coined the term "infectobesity" to describe virus-caused weight gain. It's a topic that drew his attention when he noticed that chickens infected with a deadly avian adenovirus became paradoxically fatter before they died.

US schools wage war against obesity

AFP Educators and health officials have stepped up their fight against obesity in US schools by trying to replace greasy fast food with healthy meals, and are seeing small but encouraging results. Health 24 A piece of the body's immune system might also help dampen appetite and help people lose weight, research in mice suggests. The findings are preliminary, and so far there are only indications that the component - a protein called interleukin-18 - helps prevent mice from getting fat.
